Two years ago I presented a hawthorn ( Crataegus monogyna ) I had acquired in 2012 Gallego Congress. At that time I had a little tree transplanting, pruning enough to be given and future projects for the plant. If you are curious to reread the entry here is the link: http://jjlinares.blogspot.com.es/search/label/Primeras%20formaciones?updated-max=2013-04-26T14:30:00%2B02:00&max-results=20&start=5&by-date=false

On this occasion I wish to share with you the first serious training has been given and wood work, which was another important deal in this plant part.

AL TAJO / WORK

In these two years the tree has been left sprout freely, having been pruned last year to reduce the length of new shoots and encourage branching. An appropriate program of fertilization and irrigation have made generous hawthorn begin the new year that looks like.

Returned to give a little scary, as once told me a follower of the blog. The thorns waiting for their ration of bait and I was going to give: you know that I do not like cutting and, therefore, I have to suffer them.

Armed mower started to remove all the shoots that were not going to serve for modeling and to reduce the length of those with whom I was staying. After a while the appearance had changed something, no longer so scared.

Inside a plastic box we can see all that we have pruned branches.

I believe that the protagonist of this has been, without doubt, the work that was pending in dead wood. There were quite a few stumps had to go over and over to do a job that "naturalice" the appearance of the tree. To carry out mostly I used a set of gouges and chisels, but also helped me on a couple of occasions, the support of electrical machinery to make a first roughing. In any case the kick of work has always been done manually, along the lines of "first machine, then chisels".

As I said there were enough areas pruning cuts that had to be reviewed, although wood work presented two challenges more complex to solve than others. One was an area in the top of the tree near the apex.

In this section the trunk is divided into two parts, forming a double apex. The idea was to stay with the portion rearward and remove the front, rougher without taper. This claim had already commented in the previous post dedicated to this plant:

Surely employs nearly an hour to work this area. When I finished pass a torch to remove any burr wood, then followed by washing the area with water and a stiff brush. The result is what you see in the picture below.

In this last picture and tree wiring is guessed, I did not care to make before modeling, so I show you what I have.

Another sticking point was at the base, where there was a stump which was initially going to be converted into a secondary trunk. It was not fancy, but I thought I could help hide a small area of inverted taper. Also this detail is explained in the previous post:

I got to work this area with the idea to stick to the original plan:

However that area created me an inner restlessness, not quite see it included in the design, so I decided to cut.

Thus I found a new stump would have to hide.

The technique used was the same as explained above. First the wood work:

Luego se le pasó el soplete:

    After I passed the torch:

And finally came clean with water gun and brushes:

Although time has yet to make its work, the result was quite credible.

Also other areas were treated with the same method:

Once the wood work completed played start with the first wiring and positioning of branches, a chore that if it were not for my hobby of keeping the thorns would even pleasant. Finally image featuring hawthorn has changed a lot with respect to the original. I show the result.

As you can imagine is only an approximation to its future aspect, but I'm satisfied with the result. From now on you have to get a thin branch more intricate and create an apex almost from scratch. The wood has not been treated at all, or may be made until a couple of years elapsed, I want you to get the natural look that only gives exposure to the elements. As a final image I leave a picture of the tree when it came to my garden, seeing itself a major change is sensed in its evolution ... hopefully for good!.

Hitherto hath given today's post. I hope in the next tide, where new adventures await us plying the seas of bonsai.
