En Mondariz había un carballo... / In Mondariz had an oak ...

HISTORIA PREVIA / PREVIOUS HISTORY

                                         ----------------------------------------------

It had been some time since I had arrived references on a sessile oak, or as we call Carballo in Galicia, owned by an amateur Mondariz, a city in the south of Pontevedra. From what I had heard was an important piece, with enough potential to become a good bonsai. By that time I still had no relationship with the owner, so my first encounter with the tree was expected a few years yet.

After some time I had occasion to meet in person to Abril, last name with which we know the owner of the copy. Gradually our friendship grew and contacts between the two became more and more frequent. With this stage were the bases for my meeting with her Carballo was more or less imminent ... but will slightly alter the order of events for today's adventure makes sense.

A few months ago Abril sent me some pictures of your oak before I knew it. Not that they are many and they are not collected all previous steps were giving, but serve to get an idea of what has been the path of the specimen. The first picture I show is the day in which he was first transplanted to pot, was formerly planted in plastic one. If you look closely you can notice the old level planted, it was rather more buried.

                                         ------------------------------------------------
The next picture shows the sprouting who had potted the first year.

                                            ------------------------------------------------
The following figures show the time when its current pot was transplanted.

    Ya en la actual maceta.
                                        ----------------------------------------------
    Already in the current pot.

                                               ---------------------------------------------
It began to consider a change in the angle of planting, hence these photos look as the tree with an inclination on the bench culture.

                                                   ----------------------------------------
Incidentally, in this last picture you can see how they had placed some tension anchored to a wooden stake. It is beginning to see the need to descend some branches.

MI PRIMER ENCUENTRO CON EL ÁRBOL / MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH TREE

                                                         ----------------------------------
It was a cool winter day, almost spring, the year 2013 when I was able to see for the first time this oak. At that time we had stayed a few friends to visit to Abril at his home in Mondariz, and looked forward to seeing the piece live and comments from my fellow travelers did nothing but increase my interest.

Once we reached the place I could see firsthand the quality of material. That morning spent all morning working other trees of lesser but after lunch, April asked me to orientase with oak. Then began a detailed examination of the work that should be done and when finished exposure thereof me said if I wanted to start to model. Really this request was, in part, what I was expecting, so I quickly put to work as winter evenings have few hours of daylight. There was no time to lose.

The main defect was that the tree was 90 ° describing the trunk. It was felt that the best way to pass unnoticed that this detail was to raise the plant so not call much attention. When I first saw the tree, the lower branches, just those that were located in the elbow area, had been removed.

We started to wire in a hurry after making a selection of branches. Anyway we did not get finished and half the tree was no wire. I put the task that ended the owner of wiring and branching put something missing. After a few weeks, after sprouting spring, he sent me the following photo.

                                                    ----------------------------------------
As you can see missing a lot of work still ahead and not until a year later, in 2014, when more afinase modeling.

A year had passed since the first attempt at modeling, we were in March and presented rainy day. Some comrades who had never seen the oak joined us, not missing the opportunity to do a photo essay despite the weather.

                                           -------------------------------------------
The tree had been cultivated during the last year with bowed pot in an attempt that was adapted to what was to be his new angle planting. The owner had removed many of the wires that are beginning to stick and was careful to protect the substrate from rain, since one of the tasks was planned to perform the transplant.

                                                -----------------------------------------
Once put the tree in a place sheltered from the rain, I started working stumps generated when the branches were pruned mentioneded above. One of them, the eldest, was this:

...y así quedó finalmente:
                                                ----------------------------------------
... and so it finally became:

    Otra zona trabajada...
                                                   ---------------------------------------
    Another area worked ...

                                                       -----------------------------------------
After finishing work on dry wood, the next step was to wire the whole branch, it was time that the tree should receive a complete modeling. For this work I needed the tree were placed in a more or less definite position, so we worked with the slanted pot but taking care to firmly anchor the plant to prevent accidents.

                                                  --------------------------------------------
The wire placement lasted several hours, but this time the work came aa fruition. Here you can see one of the branches and wired and positioned.

    Vista general de la ramificación.
                                                              --------------------------
    Overview of the branch.

                                                        ----------------------------------
The next step was to face repot. I already took several hours working, so I requested the help of those present to finish early. In the next picture you can see the appearance presented by the root ball.

                                                        --------------------------------------
A closer jack lets us see the amount of mycorrhizae had oak.

    Eliminando la tierra vieja.
                                                          ---------------------------------------
    Removing the old substratum.

                                          -------------------------------------------------
Testing whether the rootball fit inside the pot with its new slant.

                                                -----------------------------------------------
This was a delicate moment, had to choose the exact position of the tree would be planted or bad until the next transplant, which would probably take several years to do. My companions held the oak while, located a few meters further back, calculated the ideal position.

                                                    -----------------------------------------------
Once completed the transplant, the owner of the tree posing proudly with his bonsai.

                                                   ---------------------------------------------
Finally the whole group also posed for posterity.

                                                     ------------------------------------------
Before leaving I left clear instructions to Manuel Abril for the following days. Among other told of the desirability of covering the substrate with moss and dead wood treated with sulfocálcico broth. After a few days he sent me the following photos, attesting that had followed the recommendations given him.

Months later I got more pictures. On this occasion the oak wore a beautiful foliage.

In August 2014 this bonsai made his debut in an exhibition. For the first time he would submit to the judgment of the public, was in the "Mostra bonsai Moaña".

                                                     ---------------------------------------
It also had the honor of being on the poster for the show.

                                            -------------------------------------------
Finally, in October, was presented to Galician Bonsai Congress, where he got rave reviews.

                                               --------------------------------------------
Currently this oak remains refined and cultivated with care in hopes that one day may be exhibited in other important exhibitions. No doubt it will get but in the meantime, I hope you enjoyed this post, dedicated to showing the path so far, I hope that the adventure was worth it.
